Our Commitment
YouNote is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We are continually improving the user experience for everyone and applying the relevant accessibility standards to ensure we provide equal access to all users.
Conformance Status
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities and more user-friendly for everyone.
Accessibility Features
YouNote includes the following accessibility features:
Navigation
- Skip Links: A "Skip to main content" link is available on all pages to bypass repetitive navigation
- Keyboard Navigation: All interactive elements are accessible via keyboard
- Landmark Regions: Proper HTML5 landmarks (main, nav, header, footer) for easy navigation with assistive technologies
- Logical Tab Order: Focus moves through the page in a logical sequence
Visual Design
- Color Contrast: Text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast requirements
- Focus Indicators: Visible focus outlines on all interactive elements
- High Contrast Support: Enhanced focus styles for users with high contrast preferences
- Reduced Motion: Animations are reduced or disabled for users who prefer reduced motion
- Resizable Text: Text can be resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality
Content Structure
- Semantic HTML: Proper use of headings, lists, and other HTML elements
- Page Titles: Descriptive page titles on every page
- Heading Hierarchy: Logical heading structure (H1, H2, H3) on all pages
- Alt Text: Meaningful alternative text for images
Forms and Interactions
- Form Labels: All form inputs have associated labels
- Error Messages: Form errors are announced to screen readers using ARIA live regions
- Button Labels: All buttons have accessible names
- Dialogs: Modal dialogs properly trap focus and can be closed with keyboard
Assistive Technology Support
- Screen Readers: Compatible with popular screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, Narrator)
- ARIA Attributes: Appropriate use of ARIA roles, states, and properties
- Live Regions: Dynamic content updates are announced to assistive technologies

YouNote supports the following keyboard shortcuts:

Known Limitations
While we strive for full accessibility, some areas may have limitations:
- YouTube Embeds: Embedded YouTube videos have their own accessibility features managed by YouTube
- Third-Party Content: Some third-party integrations may not meet all accessibility standards
- PDF Exports: Exported markdown files may require additional accessibility formatting
Testing
We regularly test YouNote for accessibility using:
- Automated testing tools (axe, Lighthouse)
- Manual keyboard navigation testing
- Screen reader testing (VoiceOver on macOS)
- Browser accessibility tools
